St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( July 1, 1998) BELLE FOURCHE STUDENT WINS 6TH PLACE FINISH FOR SDSM& T IN WOMEN'S DISTANCE CANOE RACE DURING NATIONAL CONCRETE CANOE COMPETITION Crissy Shear of Belle Fourche won 6th place in the women's distance canoe race for SDSM& T during the 1998 National Concrete Canoe Competition hosted recently by the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T). She and her co- paddler, Emily Shaffer of Aberdeen, completed the women's distance event with a time of 5: 04.97, finishing ahead of fifteen other university teams from across the country who qualified for the national competition. Crissy will be a junior civil engineering major at SDSM& T this fall and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE) Student Chapter at South Dakota Tech. Although the smallest of the 21 universities that competed in the 11th Annual National Concrete Canoe Competition, SDSM& T earned a 7th place finish overall. The three- day competition, which is sponsored by Master Builders, Inc. and ASCE, drew several hundred people to the Black Hills.
