Leopold, Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of the Motorola Satellite Communications Group, will give the address at SDSM& T's winter commencement Saturday, December 20, at 10: 00 a. m., in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Theater. Karisa M. Klock, Interdisciplinary Science major from Sioux Falls, will give the senior class representative's message. Regent Patricia O. Lebrun will present the message from the South Dakota Board of Regents. SDSM& T President Dr. Richard J. Gowen also will present Dr. Leopold with an honorary degree as Doctor of Telecommunications Management. Dr. Leopold is a leader in the design and development of Motorola's revolutionary IRIDIUM program to place 76 satellites in stationing orbit for a global wireless communication system. The satellites are being constructed at a rate of one satellite every 4.5 days. Several satellites have already been launched and are in orbit. Leopold is one of the three engineers who in 1987 created the IRIDIUM System, the realization of global, wireless, and personal communications. He became the program's first Systems Engineering Director, where he was responsible for the system- level development of the satellite- based IRIDIUM System. MOTOROLA EXECUTIVE TO BE FEATURED SPEAKER AT SDSM& T COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY FORUM DECEMBER 19TH Dr. Raymond J. Leopold, Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of the Motorola Satellite Communications Group, will be the featured speaker at a the SDSM& T Communications Technology Forum on Friday, December 19, from 12: 00 noon to 1: 30 p. m. in Tech's Surbeck Center Ballroom. Dr. Leopold brings a global perspective of the exciting developments in telecommunications. He is a leader in the design and development of Motorola's revolutionary IRIDIUM program to place 76 satellites in stationing orbit for a global wireless communication system. The satellites are being constructed at a rate of one satellite every 4.5 days. Following his presentation, Dr. Leopold will be available at 1: 30 p. m. for questions and a more in- depth technical discussion with people who are interested in staying after the luncheon. The forum will be of interest to all individuals, businesses and organizations involved with telecommunications, computer technology, Internet providers and communication systems. FIVE SDSM& T PROJECTS RECEIVE AGENDA FOR EXCELLENCE FUNDING Five innovative SDSM& T projects were selected for funds totaling $ 70, 000 from the Agenda for Excellence program. The projects will take SDSM& T's academic and research programs to a new level of excellence. " We are leveraging for excellence through these awards, " said Dr. Richard J. Gowen, SDSM& T President. " They increase the amount available by matching funds from our corporate partners and other external funding sources." The following projects received funding: Atomic Force/ Scanning Tunneling/ Interfacial Force Microscopes: This project leverages the National Science Foundation grant to acquire this state- of- the- art equipment that will be integrated into SDSM& T's multi- disciplinary curriculum and research activities. Acquisition of Enhanced Instrumentation for Dynamic Systems Analysis: This award provides National Science Foundation matching funds to acquire a VPI 4000 laser vibrometer, a world- class system available at only a few institutions in the world. This system will support the Compliant Structures Laboratory, Artificial Neural Systems Laboratory, Civil Engineering Research, Industrial Outreach, and student learning. Integration of Chemical Engineering Design Through Process Simulation: This project matches Dow Chemical Company's grant to expand the concepts of design and the use of a powerful process simulation system throughout the undergraduate curriculum. Enhancement of University's Computing Resources and Quality of Instruction: This award provides a match to the external funding provided by Barrick Gold Strike and Maptek, Inc. to enhance the computing resources of the Mining Engineering Department and improve the quality of instruction and equipment for SDSM& T's Mine Design Laboratory. Human Factors/ Ergonomics Laboratory Development : This project provides the NSF matching monies to purchase equipment and software for the Industrial Engineering Department's Human Factors and Ergonomics Laboratory. The Agenda for Excellence program, supported by a component of the student support fee and SDSM& T Foundation funds, provides a funding mechanism for meritorious projects that propel SDSM& T into new frontiers of excellence and learning. SDSM& T SKILL PROGRAM RECEIVES SD COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GRANT SDSM& T's Scientific Knowledge for Indian Learning & Leadership ( SKILL) program recently received a $ 6, 672 grant from the South Dakota Community Foundation. The grant will be utilized to support SKILL's NASA Honors Program, an important part of SKILL's innovative efforts to encourage American Indian students to pursue math, science and engineering careers. Tech's 1997 freshman class includes eight American Indian students who participated in the NASA Honors Program. South Dakota Community Foundation Executive Director Bernie Christenson and Foundation Directors Chuck Lien, Bob Helmer, Luke Yellow Robe, and Art Zimiga recently visited the Tech campus to present SKILL Director Phillip Huebner with a check for the grant. Foundation officials also had an opportunity to visit with Justine " J. R." High Elk of Dupree. She is a freshman civil engineering major at Tech and a graduate of SKILL's NASA Honors Program. SDSM& T STUDENTS INITIATED INTO ETA KAPPA NU HONOR SOCIETY South Dakota Tech students recently initiated into Eta Kappa Nu ( HKN), the international electrical engineering ( EE) honor society, include Travis Jones, junior EE major, Saratoga WY; Gordon Jons, senior EE major, Cedar Rapids IA; and Alexa Maxwell, junior EE major, Box Elder SD. Membership in Eta Kappa Nu is restricted to the upper one- fourth of the junior class and upper one- third of the senior class. In addition to high scholastic requirements, high character qualities are requisite. 18 SDSM& T STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR PRAXIS COMMUNITY SERVICE As part of the first Praxis program offered on a South Dakota campus, 18 SDSM& T students recently were recognized for volunteering a total of 266 community service hours to local agencies and civic organizations. Drs. Kathy Antonen, Michael Day and James McReynolds were the faculty members who participated in this fall's pilot Praxis project, which is coordinated by Donna Hughes- Hargraves. The Tech students volunteered at the Boys' Club; Girls Incorporated; Head Start; Habitat for Humanity; Hospice of the Hills; Journey Museum; Little Miners' Clubhouse; Literacy Council of the Black Hills; SHARE South Dakota; Western South Dakota Juvenile Services; and Women Against Violence, Inc. Several students plan to continue volunteering their time and talents to local community agencies. Dr. Douglas Lange, Dean of Students, compared Praxis to a saltation, or leap, by the university into the community. " This program blends academic and student affairs in a concrete way with the ideals of service, " said Lange. SDSM& T TO HOST 3rd BIENNIAL LAND SURVEY SEMINAR The 3rd Biennial Land Survey Seminar: " GPS AND GIS – Map Makers vs. Surveyors…?" will be held at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology on Friday, December 5. The seminar runs from 8: 00 a. m. to 4: 45 p. m. in the Surbeck Center Ballroom on the Tech campus. Dr. M. R. Hansen, SDSM& T Associate Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering, will serve as moderator for the seminar. SDSM& T MINING PROFESSOR PARTICIPATES IN 1ST INTERNATIONAL INTERNET CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES IN THE MINERAL INDUSTRIES. Dr. Zbigniew " Ziggy" Hladysz, SDSM& T Chair and Professor of Mining Engineering, is participating in Mine IT' 97, the first International Internet Conference on Information Technologies in the Minerals Industries. Dr. Hladysz served as a member of the organizing committee for the Internet conference. As part of the Mine Planning and Mining Operations technical session, Dr. Hladysz also presented a paper on computerized mine design entitled " Mining Method Selection in Visual Design." Participants in the conference include mining experts from Brazil, Canada, Greece, Yugoslavia, Ukraine, and Germany. The conference will run from December 1- 12, 1997 via a Web site at the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. SME SCHOLARSHIP WINNER Daniel Ring, a junior metallurgical engineering major, has been awarded a prestigious $ 2, 000 scholarship by the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration. Daniel is the son of Lawrence and June Ring of Norris, SD. SOPHOMORE COMPUTER ENGINEERING TEAMS PRESENT DESIGN PROJECTS Sophomore student teams in Professor Larry Simonson's Computer Engingeering 244 class, Intro to Digital Systems, recently gave presentations on the capstone projects they designed and built this semester. A total of 21 student teams designed and built projects, which included a keyless entry system, a scrolling LED marquee, a power meter, a Morse Code translator, and an electronic device that plays " Jingle Bells." SDSM& T PROFESSOR RECEIVES ADDITIONAL $ 80, 000 RESEARCH AWARD FROM NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION Dr. Mark Hjelmfelt, SDSM& T Chair and Professor of Atmospheric Sciences, Institute of Atmospheric Sciences, has been awarded an additional $ 80, 000 in funds by the National Science Foundation for his project entitled, " Convective Rolls and Cells in Lake- Effects Snowstorms: Structures, Mechanisms and Effects." SDSM& T PROFESSOR PRESENTS PAPER AT AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERS Dr. Jan Puszynski, SDSM& T Professor of Chemical Engineering Department, presented a paper on " Centrifugal – SHS Process: Effect of Additives and Modeling of Phase Separation" during the recent annual meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers ( AIChE). Puszynski also served as a chairman of a technical session on " High Temperature Noncatalytic Reacting Systems" at the AIChE meeting in Los Angeles, CA. BUSH FOUNDATION- SPONSORED WORKSHOP ON CURRICULUM- EMBEDDED EVALUATION TO BE HELD AT SDSM& T NOVEMBER 21 A Bush Foundation- sponsored workshop on " Introduction to Curriculum- Embedded Evaluation" will be held on the SDSM& T campus on Friday, November 21, from 12: 00 to 3: 30 p. m. in the Surbeck Center Bump Lounge. The workshop will be conducted by Dr. Larissa Naples, a nationally recognized private consultant who works with a number of large engineering schools on meta- assessment models and ABET Criteria 2000. This half- day workshop will introduce participants to the basic concepts underlying curriculum- embedded evaluation and assessment. Participants will learn how the information contained in a meta- assessment rubric can be used to integrate and streamline course design, instruction, and assessment activities. CUSTER ODYSSEY OF THE MIND STUDENTS VISIT SDSM& T SOLAR MOTION TEAM Custer Odyssey of the Mind students recently visited the South Dakota Tech campus to view SDSM& T's solar car and discuss vehicle design issues with the SDSM& T Solar Motion Team. The Custer OM students' inquisitive minds were in full gear during their campus visit. They asked Tech's Solar Motion team members many good questions about their experiences with designing and racing Dakota Sun, SDSM& T's solar- powered entry in Sunrayce ' 97 this summer. Dakota Sun is one of only 35 solar- powered vehicles that completed this summer's 1, 240 mile race from Indianapolis to Colorado Springs. SDSM& T is the only university in an 11- state region -- Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming -- that entered a vehicle in Sunrayce ' 97. DAKOTA CHORAL UNION TO PRESENT " IN PRAISE OF MUSIC" CONCERT Dakota Choral Union ( DCU) will perform " In Praise of Music" at 7: 30 p. m., Saturday, November 22, in the Rapid City Civic Center Theater. The concert will be a St. Cecilia's Day celebration. St. Cecilia is the patron saint of music. Dr. James Feiszli, SDSM& T Professor of Music and Director of Music Activities, is the director of both Dakota Choral Union and Kantorei. Dakota Choral Union is a non- auditioned community choir that includes singers from several Black Hills communities. DCU also is the official symphony chorus for the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra. KADOKA STUDENT AT SDSM& T RECEIVES ENERGY LABORATORY SCHOLARSHIP Tyler Handcock of Kadoka has been awarded the Energy Laboratory Scholarship in the amount of $ 1, 200. Tyler is a sophomore chemistry major at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T). He is the son of Maurice and Cathie Handcock of Kadoka. SDSM& T STUDENTS INITIATED INTO TAU BETA PI ENGINEERING SOCIETY The South Dakota Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi recently initiated thirty- eight new members. Tau Beta Pi is a National Engineering Honor Society founded in 1885. The Alpha Chapter of SDSM& T was organized in 1974. Since then 1, 024 members have been initiated. To be eligible, students must be an engineering major and in the top 1/ 5 of the senior class or the top 1/ 8 of the junior class. TECH HOSTS LEADERSHIP RAPID CITY CLASS SDSM& T recently hosted the 1997 Leadership Rapid City class on campus. The agenda for the LRC visit included a welcome from Dr. Karen Whitehead; an overview of the SKILL program by Dr. Francine Campone; a description of the Devereaux Library resources and Film Series by Patty Anderson; tours of the civil and mechanical CAMP labs by Drs. Iyer and Dolan; and tours of the Museum of Geology, Paleo Curation Lab and Repository by Carrie Herbel. The Mini Baja, Mini Indy, Concrete Canoe and Solar Motion teams all had their vehicles on display for the LRC class. Team representatives who spoke to the LRC class were Brian Herbst ( Mini Baja); Ed Seaver ( Mini Indy); Ken Harding ( Solar Motion); and Charlie Baker ( Concrete Canoe). Following the campus visit, Dr. Gowen hosted a dinner in his home for the LRC class members. SDSM& T CONCERT CHOIR & MASTER CHORALE TO PRESENT CHRISTMAS CONCERTS DECEMBER 6- 7 The SDSM& T Concert Choir and Master Chorale will present their 15th Annual Christmas Concert, " The Birth, Joy & Celebration of Christmas, " Saturday, December 6, and Sunday, December 7. Conducted by Dr. Susan Reid, the concerts will begin at 8: 00 p. m. in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, Rapid City. President and Mrs. Gowen invite everyone to a reception immediately following the concerts downstairs in the fellowship hall. A free will offering will be taken between Part II and Part III of the concert. All monies collected will go to the SDSM& T Music Scholarship Fund. SDSM& T CONCERT CHOIR & MASTER CHORALE TO PRESENT CHRISTMAS CONCERT IN LEAD ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 30 The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology Concert Choir and Master Chorale will present their 15th Annual Christmas Concert, " The Birth, Joy & Celebration of Christmas, " in Lead this Sunday, November 30. Conducted by Dr. Susan Reid, the concert will begin at 7: 30 p. m. in Christ Church Episcopal. Admission is free. $ 1500 REWARD OFFERED FOR INFORMATION ON THEFT OF SDSM& T COMPUTERS The SDSM& T Civil & Environmental Engineering Department and the Mathematics & Computer Science Department are offering a $ 1500 reward for information leading to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of the person( s) who recently stole expensive computer equipment from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology campus. The departments identified private funds in order to offer the $ 1500 reward. A Silicon Graphics workstation ( R5K 100MHz Silicon Graphics 02 CPU) was stolen from the Mathematics & Computer Science Department last Friday or Saturday, December 5- 6. On Wednesday, December 10, a 17- inch Silicon Graphics computer monitor and a Silicon Graphics keyboard were stolen from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department between 6: 00 and 6: 45 p. m. that evening. Anyone with any information that might assist in the recovery of this stolen equipment and/ or the arrest of the person( s) responsible for these crimes is urged to contact SDSM& T Campus Security at 394- 6100 or the Rapid City Police Department Crime Investigation Division at 394- 4134.
