KAREN WHITEHEAD SELECTED AS VICE PRESIDENT OF SDSM& T SDSM& T President Richard Gowen has announced that Dr. Karen Whitehead, SDSM& T Dean College of Systems Engineering, has been selected as SDSM& T's new Vice President for Academic Affairs. Her appointment is effective July 1 upon the retirement of current Vice President Dr. James Goodman. Dr. Whitehead has served as Dean of the SDSM& T College of Systems Engineering since 1994. SDSM& T COMMENCEMENT INCLUDES FIRST Ph. D. GRADUATE OF ATMOSPHERIC, ENVIRONMENTAL, AND WATER RESOURCES ( AEWR) PROGRAM During SDSM& T's commencement on May 10th, Geraldean Loeleta Fluke received the first Ph. D. degree offered by the Atmospheric, Environmental, and Water Resources ( AEWR) program. AEWR is a joint doctoral program approved by the South Dakota Board of Regents in 1993 for the SDSM& T and SDSU. SDSM& T STUDENTS INVENT EMERGENCY VEHICLE/ LOCOMOTIVE WARNING DEVICE Two electrical engineering students from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology have invented a device that could possibly save thousands of lives some day. Eric Broughton of Canton and George Gasaway of Cody, Wyoming, have designed an early warning system which they have named " The Audio Breakthrough System." The device would warn automobile drivers of oncoming emergency vehicles and locomotives. SDSM& T " MINI- INDY" TEAM HAD TOP- PLACING CARBURETED CAR IN ENDURANCE- ECONOMY EVENT / TECH FINISHES 24TH OVERALL OUT OF 96 ENTRIES SDSM& T's " Mini- Indy" team had the fastest carbureted car in the endurance- economy portion of the Formula SAE, or Mini- Indy, competition. The competition was held May 14- 18 in the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan. Tech's team placed 24th overall out of 96 entries and was one of only 21 teams to be awarded a " Distinguished Achievement������� Certificate for earning points in every competition event. Cornell University won the Formula SAE title, upending the University of Texas at Arlington, which had won the event the past two years. Entering a car for only the second year, SDSM& T finished ahead of many larger universities with substantially bigger Mini- Indy budgets and more years of experience in the 17- year- old competition. NASA TO TEACH TEACHERS: AEROSPACE WORKSHOP AT SDSM& T JULY 21- 25 NASA education specialist Louis Marshall and other aerospace/ aviation officials will be featured presenters during the " Aerospace in the Curriculum Teacher Workshop" being offered this summer at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The workshop, which is designed for K- 12 teachers and youth organization personnel, will be held July 21- 25 from 8: 00 a. m. to 4: 00 p. m. The registration deadline is June 15. The fourth annual workshop is sponsored by Tech's South Dakota Space Grant Consortium ( SDSGC) in cooperation with Rapid City Public School System. SDSM& T PROFESSOR SELECTED FOR ANTARCTICA FOSSIL EXPEDITIONS Dr. James E. Martin, SDSM& T Professor of Geology and Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology, has been selected to participate in two fossil field expeditions to Antarctica in 1998 and 1999. The joint U. S./ Argentine project, " Maestrichtian Land Mammals of Vega Island, Antarctica Peninsula, " is designed to search for and recover fossil mammals from the area of Cape Lamb and Sandwich Bluff on Vega Island. U. S. participation in the project is funded by the National Science Foundation/ Division of Polar Programs. SDSM& T TO COSPONSOR " MANAGING MY ENVIRONMENT" SCIENCE CAMP AT LITTLE WOUND SCHOOL THIS SUMMER FOR 5TH- 7TH GRADERS The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Science Foundation are cosponsoring a " Managing My Environment" Science Camp this summer at the Little Wound School in Kyle. Students who have completed the 5th- 7th grades are invited to apply for participation in the camp, which will be held the week of June 23 - 27. |
