St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( October 10, 1997) SDSM& T'S TAU BETA PI AND TONITE RECEIVE BOARD OF REGENTS AWARDS SDSM& T's Tau Beta Pi Chapter and TONITE organization received student organization awards from the South Dakota Board of Regents today during the Board's meeting held on the Tech campus. SDSM& T's Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, a national honorary engineering society, received the Award for Academic Excellence. TONITE ( Tech's Outrageous New Initiative for Total Entertainment) won the Award for Organizational Leadership. SDSM& T's Tau Beta Pi Chapter received the award for hosting the national Tau Beta Pi Convention in Rapid City last year and for sponsoring four Engineering Futures sessions for students and faculty. Tau Beta Pi's national convention brought over 400 delegates from 206 chapters from every state in the nation to Rapid City. The bid by South Dakota Tech students to bring the national convention to Rapid City was selected over bids by Kansas State University and the University of Minnesota. The Engineering Futures sessions prepare students for engineering careers by focusing on developing communication, problem- solving, and team- building skills for the workplace. Membership in Tau Beta Pi is limited to the academic top one- eighth of the junior class and the top one- fifth of the senior class. Since Tech's Tau Beta Pi Chapter was installed in 1974, nearly 1000 Tech students have been initiated as members of the honorary engineering society. Tech alumnus Alf John Greustad of Norway is in the process of establishing the first international alumni chapter of Tau Beta Pi. Chapter officers are: President Tricia Mohrhauser ( EE, Hartford); Vice President John Tinker ( CE, Bloomington MN); Recording Secretary Mike Arens ( CE, Springview NE); and Corresponding Secretary Brian Goetsch ( ME, Milbank). Advisors are Dr. Larry Simonson, Dr. Thomas Propson, Dr. David Dixon, Dr. Gregory Buck, and Michael Mueller. Service projects by Tech's chapter include a semiannual cleanup of Highway 385 near Pactola Reservoir. Established a year ago after the student union board dissolved, SDSM& T's TONITE organization surveyed students about campus program interests. TONITE responded to the survey by offering over ten entertainment activities and programs by nationally recognized speakers on date rape, safe sex, and setting and achieving personal goals. TONITE also hosted a Haunted House for the community.
