St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( March 12, 1998) SDSM& T TO HOST ODYSSEY OF MIND REGIONAL COMPETITION THIS SATURDAY Over 400 students from west river area schools are scheduled to compete in the Odyssey of the Mind ( OM) Regional Competition this Saturday, March 14, at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The OM competition runs from 9: 00 a. m. until 4: 00 p. m. The awards ceremony will begin at 4: 00 p. m. in the New Gym. Fifty- five student teams representing schools as far away as Mission will be competing in one of the following OM problem categories: Pageant Wagon - design and build a tow vehicle and a pageant wagon and also present a festive performance that includes a grand finale Morph Magic - create and present a humorous performance that includes a character who undergoes a morph from human to animal and also include a team- made device that morphs from its original appearance into something else Classics... Marvelous Mentor - create and present a humorous performance about an advertising agency commissioned to make a television commercial about a nutritional product, including the commercial, original music, a team- created package for the product, and a discussion of the product's nutritional benefits Camouflaged Creation - design and build a camouflaged structure made of balsa wood and glue that is camouflaged as part of a larger creation that is then tested by supporting weights Create & Animate - create and present a humorous performance where an inanimate object comes to life, including a team- created poem or song and original music Dream Vacation - create and perform a skit about a dream vacation which includes two sights and an experience at each sight, a main character and a team- created song Winners from the OM Regional Competition will advance to the State OM Tournament in Pierre on April 4th. The World OM Finals will be held May 27- 30 at Walt Disney World.
