| Transcript | Outstanding in their Field SDSM& T Honors Recent Graduates Five SDSM& T graduates will be honored during Engineer's Week during a luncheon held at Surbeck Center on the Tech campus on February 26, 1998. Each recipient, chosen for outstanding professional performance, will share a few secrets of his or her success upon receiving the award. The Outstanding Recent Graduate Program was established by SDSM& T to honor graduates who, within 10 years of their graduation, have achieved exemplary career progress and recognition. The individuals selected are considered excellent role models showing current students the importance of continued personal growth in a rapidly changing world. About the 1998 honorees: Susan K. Burnet-- 1998 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Susan ( Janovy) Burnet graduated from SDSM& T with a B. S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1987. She worked as a Project Engineer for Alcoa at their aerospace and flat products division in Davenport, Iowa. While at Alcoa, Susan was responsible for electrical engineering on two major capital projects ( combined expenditures of over $ 50 million) and had production support duties. Susan attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University to obtain her Master's degree and then started her own company, IMS, with her husband, George. They have led the company to over $ 5 million in annual sales and have responsibilities in the entire North American market. Their company provides radiometric measurement equipment to the steel and aluminum industry. IMS is the leading supplier of equipment for measuring on- line, real- time, profile, thickness, flatness, width, contour, and shape of flat and tubular products. Recently, Susan completed her M. S. degree in Systems Engineering at VPI. Timothy R. Harter-- 1998 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award in Mining Engineering. Tim Harter graduated from SDSM& T with a B. S. degree in Mining Engineering in 1987. During the past ten years he has held many positions in engineering and management. Tim has been fortunate to have the opportunity to be directly involved in start- up operations at four underground mines and one mill. This experience has accelerated his career to the current point where he has become the youngest manager in Nevada. Tim currently supervises over 300 people and manages an annual budget of $ 50 million. His creative engineering contributions are impressive. The backfill techniques he pioneered are currently in use at the major underground mines in Nevada. He is also involved in many community activities. Andrzej ( Andrew) Kaczmarski-- 1998 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award in Geological Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Andrew Kaczmarski graduated from SDSM& T in 1988 as a double major with B. S. degrees in Geological Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. After graduation he accepted a position as an engineer with Shell Oil Company in New Orleans, Louisiana. Andrew has made significant advancements to Shell Oil Company's technology of developing oil and gas fields through his initiative, innovation, creativity and pragmatism. To date, he has been responsible for the design and construction of drilling and production systems totaling $ 50 million and has had an impact on the success of four $ 1 billion Tension Leg Platforms. Andrew has effectively led and contributed to numerous project teams and has been actively involved in his community. A native of Poland, he is an outstanding example of achievement and commitment to excellence in his field. Jeffrey E. Shield-- 1998 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award in Metallurgical Engineering. Dr. Jeff Shield graduated from SDSM& T with a B. S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1987. He has been very successful in teaching, research and outreach at the University of Utah. His research accomplishments lie in the basic area of microstructural development of materials during processing. Teaching responsibilities have primarily been in the characterization of materials, including x- ray diffraction and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, Dr. Shield has developed a freshman course aimed at introducing engineering to incoming students and increasing retention rates within the department. His outreach activities have included developing a series of demonstrations involving all classes of materials for the College of Engineering's Career Fair, an outreach to area high school students. In addition, Dr. Shield is working with area high schools to develop an integrated high school curriculum based on materials and engineering devices. Byron E. Wolf-- 1998 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award in Chemical Engineering. Byron E. Wolf graduated from SDSM& T with a B. S. degree in Chemical Engineering in 1987. He has spent his entire career with the Dow Corning Corporation in Midland, Michigan. Byron has held several positions within Dow Corning: engineer, development engineer, design engineer, senior chemical engineer and development specialist. Currently, he is designated as Product Steward. With this title, he has become the " voice of the customer" within Dow Corning for the silicone elastomer medical materials product line. Byron's choice of technical advancement, rather than management, has been a rewarding one for both him and for Dow Corning. Additionally, Byron has made numerous internal and external technical presentations. |
