St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 SDSM& T's SOLAR CAR WILL COMPETE IN FINAL SUNRAYCE QUALIFIER SDSM& T's Solar Motion team is getting its solar- powered car, Dakota Sun, ready to compete in next month's final qualifying competition for one of the sixteen slots still open for Sunrayce ' 97. The final round of qualifiers will be held June 17- 18 in Indianapolis shortly before the start of Sunrayce ' 97. SDSM& T MUSEUM OF GEOLOGY SPONSORING SEVERAL SUMMER FIELD DIGS The SDSM& T Museum of Geology is sponsoring several field paleontological digs this summer in the Black Hills area and along the Missouri River in which the public can participate on a limited, space- available basis. Officials from the SDSM& T Museum of Geology will be conducting scientific excavations for Jurassic Dinosaurs, Late Cretaceous Dinosaurs, giant marine turtles, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs and many other fossils at important paleontological sites in the region. The public is invited to register to participate in these exciting field digs sponsored by the SDSM& T Museum of Geology. SDSM& T PROFESSOR TO RECEIVE DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Dr. Kenneth N. Han, SDSM& T Distinguished Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and Dean of the College of Chemical, Physical and Material Sciences and Engineering, has been selected as recipient of the1997 Distinguished Alumni Award by Seoul National University. The award will be presented to Dr. Han in Seoul, Korea, on June 27th. SDSM& T HANDS- ON MUSEUM IN MOTION WILL OPEN MEMORIAL DAY The SDSM& T Museum in Motion, a hands- on museum for children, will open for the summer on Memorial Day, May 26th. The museum is located on the main floor of the Old Gym ( directly east of the Museum of Geology) on the Tech campus. Hours are 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. Monday through Saturday throughout the summer until Labor Day weekend. Museum in Motion is designed for elementary school age children to have a hands- on experience with science and engineering. NASA ADMINISTRATOR DANIEL GOLDIN TO BE SDSM& T COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Mr. Daniel S. Goldin, Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Washington, DC, will be the spring commencement speaker for the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) in Rapid City, South Dakota. The event will be held at 10: 00 a. m., May 10th, in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Mr. Goldin also will be presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Aerospace Administration during the SDSM& T commencement ceremony. MURALS FOR THE JOURNEY MUSEUM PAINTED BY SDSM& T ART PROFESSOR RaVae Luckhart, SDSM& T Professor of Art, has finished painting four large murals for the new Journey Museum which will open on May 18th. The murals are in the Geology, Paleontology, and Archaeology areas of the museum. Two of the large paintings in the SDSM& T Museum of Geology section of The Journey have three- dimensional dinosaur heads protruding from the murals. SDSM& T SKILL COMMUNITY FORUM TO FEATURE RAPID CITY'S NEW FIRST LADY In her first speaking engagement as First Lady of Rapid City, Beverly Shaw will be the featured speaker at this week's Community Outreach Forum sponsored by SDSM& T/ SKILL High School Chapter. The forum will be held from 10: 40 a. m. to 11: 30 a. m., Tuesday, May 20th, in the Rapid City Central High School Theater. Mrs. Shaw's forum topic will be " A Positive Future for Rapid City." SDSM& T TO HOST 1997 WATER FESTIVAL ON MAY 13TH/ OVER 1000 FOURTH GRADERS TO PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVITIES Over 1000 area fourth- graders will be attending the 1997 Water Festival being hosted by South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on Tuesday, May 13th. The event begins at 8: 30 a. m. and runs until 2: 00 p. m. This is the third year SDSM& T has hosted the Water Festival, which is an environmental education program directed to fourth graders. Forty- six fourth grade classes from fifteen area schools will participate in a quiz bowl and at least three 20- minute presentations related to some aspect of non- point pollution, water quality and other environmental issues. Schools from Box Elder, Black Hawk, Hermosa, Piedmont, Sturgis and Rapid City will be participating. SDSM& T SUMMER COURSES FOR TEACHERS: FROM DINSOSAURS TO THE INTERNET The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is offering a wide variety of summer courses for K- 12 teachers in the areas of science and technology. Course topics range from dinosaurs to the Internet. The courses are available for various credit options, including continuing education , undergraduate or graduate credit. |
