Dr. Richard Gowen, SDSM& T President, presented the award to Ruth, Jadwiga, Ann and Monique Ziolkowski during SDSM& T's recent 47th Annual Honors Convocation. The award honors individuals who have contributed in a very substantial way to public service. Ruth Ziolkowski serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of the nonprofit Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation. Seven of the ten Ziolkowski sons and daughters remain actively involved in the Crazy Horse project. " The Ziolkowski family provides tremendous service to the people of this region, " said Dr. Richard Gowen, SDSM& T President. " They are great ambassadors for South Dakota." SDSM& T's Honors Convocation also included a visual retrospective of the Crazy Horse Memorial and the progress made over the past 50 years. The Crazy Horse Memorial will celebrate its 50th anniversary with the dedication of the completed face of Crazy Horse on June 3, 1998. The Memorial was first dedicated 50 years ago on June 3, 1948, when Chief Standing Bear, Korczak and Governor George T. Mickelson ( with the help of his seven- year- old son, George S. Mickelson) set off the first blast on the mountain carving. When Korczak died on October 20, 1982, the torch was passed to Ruth and the children to carry on the work on the mountain. For the past fifteen years, Ruth Ziolkowski and several family members have steadfastly worked to keep Korczak's dream alive. ++ 30++ Photo Caption: SDSM& T President Dr. Richard J.
