St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 24, 1998) SDSM& T HONORS AVON NATIVE AS OUTSTANDING TEACHER The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) recently honored Avon native Gary Kocmick, a science teacher at Tri- Valley High School, with SDSM& T's 1998 Outstanding Teacher Award. SDSM& T President Dr. Richard J. Gowen, presented Kocmick with the award during SDSM& T's recent 47th Annual Honors Convocation. Kocmick grew up on a farm near Avon and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Southern State Teachers College at Springfield. In 1969 he earned a Master's degree in Education from South Dakota State University. He began his teaching career at Menno High School and four years later accepted a position with Tri- Valley High School, where he has been teaching science for the past thirty- three years. He currently teaches chemistry, physics, and physical science courses. He was named 1977- 1978 Teacher of the Year by the Tri- Valley Board of Education. Kocmick also is a part- time science instructor at National American University's Sioux Falls Branch, where he teaches physical science, geology and ecology. He and his wife, Yvonne, live near Renner and have three children Lonnie, Kristi ( a science teacher in Chester) and Larry. In nominating him for this award, Tricia Mohrhauser, a senior Computer Science major at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T), said that Mr. Kocmick " encourages his students to learn everything about the subject, takes the time to help them understand it… and keeps up with changing technology."
