| Transcript | April 20, 1998 TO: Rapid City Journal FROM: Exchange Club of Rapid City RE: Press Release for District Convention: Friday -- Sunday, April 24 - 26, 1998 Dakota Territory Exchange Clubs Meet at the Radisson The annual Dakota Territory Exchange Club district convention, sponsored this year by the Exchange Club of Rapid City, is being conducted at the Radisson Hotel during the period April 24 - 26. The American flag will be flying throughout Rapid City in honor of the convention on Saturday, April 25. The Dakota Territory District consists of twelve clubs within North and South Dakota. Approximately 100 members and guests from throughout the district, and also the National President of The National Exchange Club, Mr. Robert E. Hinske of Tucson, Arizona, are in attendance at the convention. The National Project of the Exchange Club is the prevention of child abuse. As such, Exchange Clubs support over fifty child abuse prevention centers throughout the United States. The National Exchange Club is unique from many other service clubs as it is a national rather than international organization. Because of this fact, the organization is strongly involved in Americanism and patriotic gestures as displaying the American flag. Locally, the Exchange Club of Rapid City contracts with businesses to display the flag on all national holidays at the business locations. The Club furnishes the flag, pole and bracket, and hires local youth groups to put the flags up at sunrise and take them down at sunset. Currently, over 400 businesses in Rapid City are patrons of the Exchange Club flag program. Proceeds from the program support numerous youth activities, including Boy Scouts of America, YFS, Boys Club, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, youth soccer, youth football and various other local youth groups. The Rapid City Exchange Club is primarily youth focused in its support. In addition to the flag program, the Exchange Club conducts a Christmas gift wrap program at the Rushmore Mall as a fund raiser during November and December. All the money raised goes back into the community through the club's two main programs of emphasis -- youth projects and Americanism projects. In addition to emphasis on displaying the American flag, the club's other Americanism project is the purchase and installation of Freedom Shrines throughout the Black Hills area. A Freedom Shrine is a display of some of our nation's most significant historical documents, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, Lincoln's Gettysburg Exchange Club of Rapid City Press Release for District Convention April 20, 1998 page 2 Address, and some 25 other documents of national historical impact. To date, the Rapid City Exchange Club has installed Freedom Shrines at the Rushmore Mall, West Middle School, Stevens High School, Central High School, and the Veteran's Hospital in Hot Springs, SD.
