St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 1, 1998) SDSM& T'S SKILL PROGRAM HOSTS 11th ANNUAL AISES NATIONAL AMERICAN INDIAN SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIR IN RAPID CITY APRIL 2- 4 SDSM& T's Scientific Knowledge for Learning & Leadership ( SKILL) is hosting the 11th Annual American Indian Science and Engineering Society ( AISES) National American Indian Science and Engineering Fair in Rapid City this week. The national science competition is being held April 2- 4 at the Rapid City Civic Center. Approximately 400 students from grades 5- 12 are competing in the fair and represent the top science and engineering projects of American Indian students throughout the nation and parts of Canada. Several students from SDSM& T's SKILL program will be participating in the national competition. The fair includes students from two Canadian provinces ( Ontario and Quebec) and ten states— Alaska, Arizona, California, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Many American Indian educators, tribal leaders, family members and AISES representatives also are expected to attend the three- day event. The opening ceremony for the AISES National Science and Engineering Fair will be held at Crazy Horse Memorial on Thursday, from 3: 00 - 4: 30 p. m. Freda Apple, a respected Oglala Lakota elder, will give the opening prayer. Judging of the projects will take place Friday, April 3, from 9: 00 a. m. until 4: 00 p. m. The public is invited to view the projects from 5: 00 - 8: 00 p. m. Friday evening in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center ( Rushmore Hall). An awards ceremony will be held from 9: 00 - 11: 00 a. m. on Saturday, April 4, in LaCroix A& B Rooms, followed by a luncheon in the Arena. The keynote speaker for the awards ceremony will be John Haas, Vice President of Oglala Lakota College. The awards ceremony will include an announcement of the students selected to attend the 1998 International Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held May 10- 16 in Fort Worth, TX. AISES is a private, non- profit organization that nurtures building of community by bridging science and technology with traditional Native values. The National Fair is one of AISES' precollege educational initiatives that support the advancement of American Indian students in mathematics, science and engineering. The Fair provides a learning experience promoting academic and cultural enrichment for the student participants. The local host committee for the 1998 AISES National Science and Engineering Fair includes Phillip Huebner and Karen Tucker, SDSM& T's SKILL Program; Misty Brave, Little Wound School; and Pat Nielson, Todd County Schools.
