St. Joseph Street ( Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 ( Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( April 1, 1998) SDSM& T CONCRETE CANOE TEAM TO COMPETE IN REGIONAL ASCE CONFERENCE AT UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO/ BOULDER APRIL 3- 4 SDSM& T students will be racing their new concrete canoe, nicknamed " Peacemaker, " this weekend during the1998 Rocky Mountain Regional Conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE). The conference is being held at the University of Colorado at Boulder April 3- 4. Approximately 300 students from ten universities are expected to compete in the conference that features concrete canoe races and steel bridge competitions. SDSM& T's student ASCE chapter has a strong tradition of designing and racing concrete canoes. SDSM& T has placed first in eight of the past ten regional competitions and has finished in the top five in nationals three times. South Dakota Tech won the National Concrete Canoe Competition in 1995 and was selected to host the national competition this summer. The winner of the Rocky Mountain ASCE Regional Conference competition will advance to the national competition, which will be held June 18- 20 in Rapid City. The National ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition is sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers and Master Builders, Inc. The paddlers for SDSM& T's " Peacemaker" canoe and their hometowns are Jed Brich, Oglalla NE; Jessica Gould, Rapid City; Ryan Koontz, Sturgis; Corey Lang, Arvada CO; Emily Schaffer, Aberdeen; Crissy Shear, Belle Fourche; Rhaub Walker, Rapid City; and Josh Warren, Sheridan WY. Canoe co- chairs are Dana Foreman, Winner, and Erick Lindman, Grand Rapids MN. Mark Mutziger of Yankton will give the canoe paper presentation. Terry Collins and Rich Anderson, both from Rapid City, will give the technical and non- technical presentations respectively. Sara and Shane Trautman from Spearfish are in charge of the display. Charlie Baker of Sturgis is president of the SDSM& T Student ASCE Chapter and Dr. Scott Kenner, Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering ( CEE), serves as faculty advisor.
