St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( March 12, 1998) SDSM& T PROFESSOR RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED MEMBER AWARD FROM SOCIETY OF MINING, METALLURGY AND EXPLORATION ( SME) The Society of Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration ( SME) has awarded Dr. Kenneth Han, SDSM& T Dean of the College of Materials Science & Engineering and Distinguished Professor of Metallurgical Engineering, with its Distinguished Member Award. The award was presented to Dr. Han on March 11 during the SME annual meeting in Orlando, FL. Only two other individuals in the nation were selected to receive the SME Distinguished Member Award this year. Established in 1975, the Distinguished Member Award recognizes SME members for their outstanding contributions to the technology or professional activities encompassed by the Society. The award is restricted to1% of SME's membership and is given only to those individuals have achieved distinction as an eminent authority in some aspect of his/ her field. Dr. Han has been a member of the SDSM& T faculty since 1981. He obtained B. S. and M. S. degrees from Seoul National University, and his M. S. and Ph. D. degrees respectively from the University of Illinois and the University of California, Berkeley. From 1971- 1980 he was a lecturer and a senior lecturer in Chemical Engineering at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. His research interests include hydrometallurgy, interfacial phenomena, metallurgical kinetics, solution chemistry, fine particle recovery, and electrometallurgy. Dr. Han is the author of over 120 technical papers and holds four U. S. and a number of foreign patents. In 1993 he received the Ernest L. Buckley Award, a State of South Dakota Governor's Award, in recognition of his industrial research efforts. He also has received the Milton Wadsworth Award for his contributions in hydrometallurgy and the Arthur F. Taggart Award for his series of excellent papers in extractive metallurgy, both awards from SME/ AIME. He is Editor- in- Chief of Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Review and currently serves as Chairman of the Minerals Processing Division of SME. He was inducted to the National Academy of Engineering in 1996. Last summer he received the1997 Distinguished Alumni Award from Seoul National University.
