The film will be shown at 6: 00 p. m. in the historic Elks Theatre. First shown at the Venice Film Festival in August 1994, the film tells the story of a shy postman following his dream to win the love of a lifetime. The movie was directed and co- written by Michael Radford, a British citizen born in India. Radford directed the Italian language film despite the fact that he does not speak Italian. The film is adapted from the book " Burning Patience, " a semi- biographical novel by writer Antonio Skarmeta, based on the life of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, a communist who was exiled from his native Chile and took refuge on an island off the coast of Italy. Il Postino was nominated for 5 U. S. Academy Awards including Best Picture. Popular Italian comic actor Massimo Troisi received a posthumous nomination for Best Actor, Radford was nominated as Best Director, and the screenplay received a nomination for Best Writing. The film was awarded an Oscar for Best Original Dramatic Score. This was actor Massimo Troisi's last film. Although gravely ill, Troisi chose to postpone critical heart surgery to perform the title role. The actor was able to work only an hour or two each day; two cardiologists and an oxygen tent were kept on the set for the 41- year old actor. He could only walk a few feet before having to rest; a high school physical education teacher served as a body double for more than half his scenes. Troisi was scheduled to fly to London for a heart transplant three days after filming was complete. However, his heart had weakened too much and he died less than 24 hours after the 10- week shoot ended. Admission is $ 4. Pet Pantry is sponsoring the showing of this film.
