St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( May 30, 1997) NASA TO TEACH TEACHERS: AEROSPACE WORKSHOP AT SDSM& T JULY 21- 25 NASA education specialist Louis Marshall and other aerospace/ aviation officials will be featured presenters during the " Aerospace in the Curriculum Teacher Workshop" being offered this summer at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The workshop, which is designed for K- 12 teachers and youth organization personnel, will be held July 21- 25 from 8: 00 a. m. to 4: 00 p. m. The registration deadline is June 15. The fourth annual workshop is sponsored by Tech's South Dakota Space Grant Consortium ( SDSGC) in cooperation with Rapid City Public School System. The workshop is designed to help teachers make learning an exciting adventure using state- of- the- art resources from NASA, including hands- on resources in math, science, and technology to meet educational standards. Teachers will model teaching methods, test laws of aerodynamics, build rockets, and develop projects and field trip resources to use with their students. Participants will receive a year's supply of curriculum resources for their classes and will take part in field trips. In addition to Louis Marshall from NASA, other workshop presenters will be Bill Daley of Hernandez Engineering Inc., Houston, TX, a geographer/ climatologist for NASA's Space Shuttle Earth Observation Program; Dennis Yeager, Director of Aerospace Education, Civil Air Patrol North Central Liaison Region, Minneapolis, MN; Steve Hoogerhyde, Federal Aviation Administration Rapid City Flight Standards Office; and SDSM& T Professor Emeritus Lester W. Snyder. The workshop is available for college credit through SDSM& T or Augustana College, certification renewal through the Rapid City School Board or workshop non- college credit. Costs are $ 40.00 for non- college credit, $ 140.00 for two undergraduate or graduate credits in education or physics from Augustana, or approximately $ 145.00 for one graduate credit in Meteorology Special Topics from SDSM& T. Up to four mini grants for tuition are available to Native American teachers and youth organization staff. The application deadline for the mini grants is also June 15. Workshop enrollment is limited to 24 participants. To register, contact Linda B.
