| Full text | Each fetus wears a crimson jacket, the Hmong people say, translated as "placenta, " soul threads woven by genetic intertwining of egg and sperm, double helix stitches from blooming brain to little, wiggling toe imprints in Mama's stomach. When I was born, my Mama, too, sought to feed the Earth with that scared sac, and so, a part of me was buried in my background, a fertilizing funeral from which a living tree tombstone then sprouted like a Phoenix, blossomed, nourished bees, housed birds, shaded me throughout childhood of hot, summer sun - and still reminding me of the treasure beneath that leafy bower, within a cradle of roots. X marks the spot, the Hmong people say, where my deceased soul will someday seek its jacket again and huddle there, in cyclic death, reminiscing Mama's embrace. |
