University of South Dakota Collections

  • Campus Collections is the result of collaborative efforts between the University Libraries and departments and programs across campus to provide digital access to a variety of historical collections held throughout the University.  One example is the Asteraceae family of specimens collected by W. H. Over. In 1913, William Henry Over (1866-1956) established the University of South Dakota Herbarium to provide faculty, students, and scientists with plant specimens from all counties in South Dakota and adjoining regions in the Plains and Upper Midwest. Establishing the Herbarium at the University was among Over’s many accomplishments as a botanist, author, and curator of natural history collections. The collection's focus is the Asteraceae family of specimens collected by Over throughout South Dakota between 1913 and 1949. It is but a small sample of the specimens that Over collected during his career. Browse or search the images by common name, or by genus, family, species, or subspecies. Likewise, search or browse by habitat as well as by place—county and locality.
  • The Chilson Collection includes materials relating to local histories, South Dakota history, Native American cultures, and western expansion of the United States. Included is the manuscript of an 1902 Atlantic Monthly article written by Zitkala-Sa, in which she describes the godliness in the interconnected natural world around her that leaves her experiences with Christianity pale in comparison.
  • "A wicked rebellion has broken out with all its devastating influences and results, over our once peaceful and prosperous Country." Thus begins this account of service in the Union ranks by a young man who enlisted to go to war in the summer of 1861. This journal provides descriptions of the daily life of a Union Army soldier for a 2 year period including camp, marching, and battle. The journal is unique in that we see the war between the states from the lowest level, the perspective of the enlisted foot soldier.
  • The University Libraries Art and Exhibits Committee hosts juried and unjuried exhibitions within the library building. Represented in this online collection are works from exhibitions such as the Bound and Unbound: Altered Book Exhibition and Corroborations.
  • Extraordinary expertise and years of effort by John P. Mahoney created one of the most comprehensive collections of books, periodicals, pamphlets, and ephemera about violins and the violin family of instruments. Highlighted here in this digital collection are treatises from violin masters before 1850. Please see the Mahoney Music Collection database on the USD Website for more information.
  • The Richardson Collection is made up of distinct manuscript collections focusing on South Dakota's cultural, political, and economic history. The Collection is named for Mabel Kingsley Richardson, the University of South Dakota's first Library Director. She served in this position for 35 years, from 1907 until 1941.
  • University Publications is a collection of newsletters, journals and other publications created by campus offices and programs throughout the history of the University of South Dakota.  Public Affairs, published by USD's Government Research Bureau between 1960 and 2002, analyzes the South Dakota political process and the impact of federal government policies on South Dakota.  Authors include Dr. Alan L. Clem and Dr. William O. Farber. Topics include constitutional amendments, voting machines, income tax and participant observation.
