South Dakota State University Collections

  • South Dakota State University Archives & Hilton M. Briggs Library Special Collections contains the University Archives, as well as manuscripts related to South Dakota history and life. These two general collection areas include manuscript and archival materials, books, serials, audiovisual materials, and photographs. The SDSU Archive is the principle repository for photographs and media related to South Dakota State University.
  • South Dakota State University was designated as an official U.S. depository library in 1889. These materials cover a wide range of topics including agriculture, business, commerce, education, health, social issues, current events, congressional issues, and statistics. In addition to the Federal Documents published by the GPO, the collection includes a large collection of maps and microforms as well as State of South Dakota Documents.
  • This collection of Manuscripts has rural South Dakota as its primary focus. The papers of alumni and individuals related to SDSU are a part of this collection, as well as the records of some South Dakota organizations. These materials may include:
    • Papers/records/published materials of South Dakota and alumni authors
    • Modern political papers, including grass roots politics and political figures associated with South Dakota and South Dakota State University, including Tom Daschle and Ben Reifel.
    • South Dakota and regional materials—including, but not limited to, the papers of organizations, local businesses, community figures, families, and especially material related to farming and its development in South Dakota. This area also includes the George and Evelyn Norby collection of materials related to the City of Brookings.
