A midsummer night’s dream
Leah Authier, shown left, and Janice Hildebrand, shown in the middle, prepare for the USD Theatre production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which was presented January 14-16, 1954. Authier played the part of Mustard-seed, and Hildebrand played the part of Puck.

3. Rear entrance to the Administration building. The building contains the administration offices, music practice rooms, the museum, and Slagle auditorium. The auditorium has a seating capacity of 2,250.

Apartment 38, Cypress Court
In 1958, the University of South Dakota received a substantial loan to build Cypress Court and an addition to Julian Hall. Cypress Court consisted of forty small apartments and was inhabited by married students. Redwood Court joined the neighborhood two years later.

Art lesson
This unidentified young student was one of many who attended summer art classes offered on campus by Professor Wilber M. Stilwell. This photograph, taken in Old Main when the art facilities were located on the third floor, illustrates a longstanding commitment for arts education by the University.

Audiological assessment
The examiner and examinee no doubt posed for this photograph. The instrument shown is probably a Maico H-1. This type of audiometer was popular in the 1950s.

Barber Fay Swisher
Barber Fay Swisher, originally from Emerson, Iowa, had his shop in the basement of the March Theatre for twenty years before moving to the Evergreen Service building group on Cherry Street in 1956. The March Theatre was torn down in early 1957. Legend has it that Fay Swisher had never once missed a USD homecoming game.

Baseball game
36. A scene from one of the University baseball games. The University does not participate in intercollegiate baseball, but each spring the University tournament attracts much attention. Fifteen or twenty teams are arranged into two leagues. The champions of the two leagues then play a "world's series".

Students of the University utilized the basement of East Hall to dry their laundry.

Basketball courts in New Armory
14. The basketball floor in the new armory and gymnasium. This is the largest basketball floor in the state of South Dakota. It contains three regulation size courts. More than 2,000 persons can be seated at basketball games. The room also contains physical education equipment and an indoor running track.
