School of Mines Names Scholarship After Student
The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers has renamed its scholarship after Chad Nienhueser, a Civil Engineering major from Sidney, Neb., who passed away in a vehicle accident in January 2005.
The scholarship will now be called the Chad Nienhueser Memorial Scholarship in honor of Chad and his involvement in the organization as a member and past president. Chad is remembered as an excellent motivator who was able to encourage School of Mines students to become involved and be active in the organization.
Each year, the chapter awards two $350 scholarships. Any organization member of active standing who has completed at least five hours of volunteer time on a student chapter project in the previous year is eligible.
The original scholarship began after the chapter won the National Concrete Canoe Competition in 1995. The $5,000 prize was set aside to begin the scholarship fund. Since then, a portion of donations the organization receives are added to the account. Chad was an active member of ASCE and served as president in 2003. He also played a key role in the dedication of the Black Hills Railroad in Deadwood as a South Dakota Civil Engineering Landmark in 2004.
The School of Mines is an engineering and science university located in Rapid City, S.D.
