MURALS FOR THE JOURNEY MUSEUM PAINTED BY SDSM& T ART PROFESSOR
RaVae Luckhart, SDSM& T Professor of Art, has finished painting four large murals for the new Journey Museum which will open on May 18th. The murals are in the Geology, Paleontology, and Archaeology areas of the museum. Two of the large paintings in the SDSM& T Museum of Geology section of The Journey have three- dimensional dinosaur heads protruding from the murals.
As a South Dakota artist, Luckhart understands the land and sky features which are characteristic of the area and thus was able to paint the murals without doing a lot of research. Using only loose sketches as a starting point, RaVae developed the murals while painting as if in a studio. RaVae considers being selected for the murals a compliment, because many artists live their entire lives in a community without having the opportunity to participate in a project of the Journey’s size and scope.
Now that the murals are finished for The Journey, RaVae will resume her full- time duties at SDSM& T as Professor of Art and Director of the New Gallery on the Tech campus. For additional information about the murals, contact RaVae Luckhart at 348- 7737 or The Journey at 394- 6923.
