WISEST Hosts Luncheon Speaker
The group WISEST (Women in Sync – Engineering, Science & Technology) at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology invites the community to attend a brown bag luncheon scheduled for noon Thursday, March 20, in the Surbeck Student Center on campus.
Tech alumnus Cheryl Kandaras Chapman, founding principal and president of Matrix Consulting Group, will speak during the lunch. Matrix Consulting Group, a Rapid City company, provides all aspects of environmental assessment and analysis, including strategic planning for regulatory compliance. Chapman earned a bachelor’s degree in Math from Tech in 1978. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
Tech staff formed WISEST in 2002 to support and promote women on campus through a variety of activities and programming. WISEST members strive to increase the number of women in engineering and science majors and increasing the graduation rate of female students.
Programming includes monthly lunches when local professional women engineers or scientists describe what they do and how they obtained success. The group also hosts weekly meetings and manages a website that includes links to scholarships, community support systems and other resources for women.
