RAPID CITY ---- South Dakota School of Mines women’s basketball standout Melanie Vedvei recently scored over 1,000 during her junior season as a Lady Hardrocker --- and that total continues to rise.
The 5-foot-9-inch junior from Lake Preston, S.D., has played 11 games this season and after multiple double-figure performances, has amassed 1,211 total points as of Dec 6. Vedvei has scored 10 points or over 10 times this year, scored 20 or more points in seven outings and has netted over 30 points twice on the season.
Vedvei actually cracked the 1,000 mark in the second game of the 2006-07season when she needed just one point heading into the matchup with Mount Marty College. She scored eight points in the game and has been adding to her total since then.
Vedvei also received the first Dakota Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors for the firs week in December and also already leads the conference for the most points scored on the season with 239 total. “Melanie is phenomenal,” said Lady Hardrocker head coach Barb Felderman. “She plays the last min of every game like she plays the first minute. As a coach sometimes you get a good offensive player or a good defensive player. Melanie is the total package.
Vedvei is also the 2005-06 DAC MVP. She is also currently ranked third in NAIA Division II in steals per game at 4.273, ranked 10 in points per game at 19.55, ranked 20th in assists with 4.9 a game and is 31st in defensive rebounds per game at 5.9.
And as good as she is, she continues to get better,” Felderman added. All the while she is having a blast out there.
The Lady Hardrockers are 7-5 on the season after dropping the first DAC game of the season to Black Hills State Dec. 6. South Dakota Mines will next see action a week from Friday at the Midland Lutheran Classic hoops tournament in Nebraska.
