RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines men’s basketball team travels to North Dakota today to take on the Mayville State Comets for the Dakota Athletic Conference tournament title. The winner of the bout earns a spot in the NAIA National tournament in Point Lookout MO.
The Hardrockers come into the game with a 16-15 overall record while the Comets have a mark of 22-8 and each team split during the regular season winning at home.
The Comets finished the regular season atop the DAC standings, posting an 11-3 conference mark while the ‘Rockers tied for second registering a 9-5 mark. Mayville is the No. 1 seed in the tournament while SDM entered as the No. 3 team.
The Hardrockers dismantled No. 6Dickinson State in the first round of the DAC tournament, 100-82 and then pulled off a win over the second seeded Jamestown Jimmies, 71-62. The Comets, who have had home-court advantage all through the postseason, defeated eighth seeded Dakota State, 88-72, in the first round and then rallied back to beat No. 4 Valley City State, 66-62 during the semifinal matchup.
The Comtes have a very solid lineup with four players scoring double figures each game. Mayville is led by 6-5-inch senior Monty Rodgers who cashes in for 18 points and six rebounds a game. Senior teammate Matthew Stenehjem puts up 12 points a game.
The Hardrockers, a squad with five seniors in the lineup, is paced by senior Casey Schmitz, who dishes in 13 points a game while fellow seniors Matt Lyndoe, Brandon Lord and Brandon Fredrickson all contribute with 10 points a contest.
The game is slated for a 6 p.m. MST start.
