RAPID CITY --- The South Dakota School of Mines women’s volleyball program along with Lady Hardrocker head coach Tiffany Mastin are pleased to announce the signing of the newest recruit, Jessie Guthals, to the SD Mines 2009 volleyball team.
Guthals is a 5-foot-8-inch right side hitter and defensive specialist from Colorado Springs, Colo., who excelled at Doherty High School. She also played club volleyball from the Pikes Peak Volleyball Club team.
“Jessie has played volleyball at the highest level in Colorado and came from a very good high school team,” Mastin said. “That experience will carry over and it will be a great benefit to our program.”
During her senior year, Guthals played in 96 games, tallying 95 kills and was 242-292 on the attack. She averaged almost one kill per game.
“Jessie is an awesome girl and (SD School of Mines) is lucky to get such a class act kid who is so determined and versatile,” said Doherty High School volleyball coach Julie Ortiz.
The Doherty Spartans made an appearance in the Colorado State Volleyball Tournament this past season and finished fifth place overall.
“Jessie has a great deal of athleticism and is a well rounded player,” Mastin said. “She’s seen time as a libero, right side hitter and setter. She is a kid that we have some options with --- and she’s a lefty.”
Guthals will come into a Hardrocker team that has a top-notch recruiting class after losing seven seniors to graduation. The SD Mines season will begin at the end of August with three competitive tournaments before starting the Dakota Athletic Conference portion of the schedule Sept. 18 at home against Minot State.
