FREE PUBLIC LECTURE TODAY
A NEW APOCALYPSE: NATURAL DISASTERS IN THE 21ST CENTURY
The SIGMA XI – Scientific Research Society Black Hills Chapter is hosting their fall lecture today, October 19, at 4: 00 p. m. in the Classroom Building Room 204 on the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Nationally known speaker, Dr. William H. Hook, an American Meteorological Society ( AMS) - Sigma Xi Lecturer, will present the topic of the lecture, A New Apocalypse: Natural Disasters in the 21st Century. This lecture is free and open to the public – everyone is welcome.
Prior to joining the AMS in June of 2000, Dr. Hooke worked 32 years as a scientist/ manager for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA). From 1987 to 1993 he was the deputy chief scientist of NOAA, setting policy and research directions in climate, oceanography, weather and marine resources. From 1993- 2000, he led interagency programs in weather research and natural disaster reduction, and also served for 18 months as senior scientist for the secretary of commerce. The author of more than 50 publications and co- author of one book, Dr. Hooke is a graduate of Swarthmore College ( S. B., Physics Honors, 1964) and the University of Chicago ( S. M., 1966; Ph. D., 1967, Geophysical Sciences).
