Stevens High School Student Wins Top Science Fair Award
Tyler Ellis, a Rapid City Stevens High School student, took home the top award from the 46th High Plains Regional Science and Engineering Fair held Friday at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
Ellis won the first place Intel International Science and Engineering Fair trophy. He now will travel to San Jose, Calif, in May to compete in the international fair. His project was called “ Comparison of Sulfonated Biomasses to an Acidic Ion Exchange.”
Also going to San Jose is Ryan Brunner, a Newell High School student who took home the second place ISEF award Friday. His project was called “ Carbon Sequestration.”
More than 400 sixth- through 12th- graders brought their science and engineering projects to South Dakota Tech for Friday’s event. The fair featured 350 entries from students from across South Dakota.
Students in sixth through eighth grades competed in one of the following categories: biological, physical and team. Students in ninth through 12th grades competed in one of these divisions: medicine and health, biology, chemistry/ physics/ mathematics, engineering/ earth and space sciences and behavioral and social sciences.
