SPEARFISH RESIDENTS PRESENT 1st GRANT KOPPELMAN SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED IN MEMORY OF SDSM& T GRADUATE KILLED IN ETHIOPIA
Glen and Ardie Koppelman of Spearfish recently presented Michael Connell of Rapid with the first Grant Koppelman Scholarship established in memory of their son, Grant Koppelman, a South Dakota Tech alumnus killed in Ethiopia in June of 1995.
The scholarship was established at SDSM& T by Grant Koppelman’s family after Grant was killed while traveling in Ethiopia in June of 1995. Bandits threw a grenade at an Irish relief agency pickup in which Koppelman and a companion had caught a ride. Grant was traveling toward Kenya when the grenade attack occurred near the village of Arba Minch, Ethiopia. His extensive travels prior to his death included Thailand, Sri Lanka, the Maldives Islands, Yemen, New Zealand, Australia, Europe, and Indonesia.
Grant graduated summa cum laude from Rapid City Stevens High School and summa cum laude from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1986 with a B. S. degree in metallurgical engineering. He worked for Senator Tom Daschle as a campaign intern in 1986. He then went on to Harvard Law School, graduating cum laude in 1989. At the time of his death he was on leave from Brown and Bain Law Offices in Phoenix as an associate attorney with his practice in antitrust, securities, environmental and media law.
Grant Koppelman’s parents, Glen and Ardie Koppelman of Spearfish, joined SDSM& T officials recently in presenting the first scholarship in their son’s memory to Michael Connell, a senior metallurgical engineering major at SDSM& T.
