Tech Soccer Club heads to regional tourney
The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Soccer Club is heading to the National Association of Collegiate Soccer Region 1 tournament today.
The team finished third in the Great Plains Soccer Conference and hopes are high that the squad will do well in the tournament, being held at the National Sports Complex in Blaine, Minn., faculty advisor and coach John Helsdon said.
The club is guaranteed games against Moorhead State, University of Minnesota Twin Cities and the University of Wisconsin Stout. The team with the best record in that group will play for the tournament championship against the winner of the other bracket. The two teams in the championship game are guaranteed spots in the national tournament. The teams that finish third and fourth have a good shot for a national bid, Helsdon said.
“ I think we’ll be competitive throughout,” he said. “ We lost twice to Moorhead this year, but we played poor games. I think we can beat them. With Wisconsin and Minnesota, I have no experience with them to judge, but I think we’ll be competitive no matter what.”
The team finished 9- 3- 2 in conference play.
Six Rapid City natives play on the team. All six played in the Rapid City Youth Soccer League and for the Rushmore Soccer Club. They are Matt Alexander, Kody Sharp, Matt Pfister, Zach Stone, Brandon Silver and Josh Uecker.
