SDSM& T STUDENT FROM DORCHESTER NAMED KENNECOTT SCHOLAR
Angel Emerson of Dorchester, who is a student at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, has been named a recipient of the Kennecott Scholarship. She will receive a $ 3500 scholarship for the 1997- 1998 school year. In addition to the scholarship, Angel has been selected for a paid internship this summer with Kennecott’s Utah Copper Mine in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Angel recently completed her sophomore year as a Geology major. She is the daughter of Janice Emerson of Dorchester. Lyle Randen, General Manager of Kennecott’s Spring Creek Coal Company, and Steve Carlisle, Human Resources Manager of Kennecott’s Spring Creek Coal Company, announced Emerson’s selection as a Kennecott Scholar during a recent awards luncheon on the South Dakota Tech campus in Rapid City. Lyle Randen, a 1971 Chemical Engineering graduate from South Dakota Tech, is one of many SDSM& T graduates employed by Kennecott companies.
“ We are grateful for the very generous support which Kennecott Corporation is providing to South Dakota Tech. Kennecott’s decision reflects Tech’s national reputation as a top- notch science and engineering institution that offers the disciplines and the type of quality graduates that Kennecott is seeking,” said SDSM& T President Gowen. “ Our partnership with Kennecott will mark a new level of educational excellence for South Dakota Tech. Angel Emerson is to be congratulated on receiving this scholarship. We are pleased that Angel is a part of the South Dakota Tech family.”
Kennecott companies have supported SDSM& T for many years, with recent gifts exceeding $ 100,000 in direct support to students and departments. Kennecott Energy Corporation, based in Gillette, WY, is a subsidiary of RTZ/ CRA, based in London, England and Melbourne, Australia, respectively.
