BELZER SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED AT SDSM& T
E. E. “ Buddy” Belzer III and Deanne Belzer have established a $ 1,000 scholarship at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Entering freshmen from DeSmet High School will be given first preference for receiving this annual award. Second preference will be given to a graduate from Lake Preston High School who has been accepted at SDSM& T.
Buddy Belzer graduated from DeSmet High School in 1970 and attended college at SDSM& T, receiving his B. S degree in civil engineering in 1974. “ Our intention in providing this scholarship to the young people of my hometown is to encourage them to consider South Dakota Tech in Rapid City for their continuing education” said Belzer who is currently the Vice President and Co- Branch manager of A. G. Edwards & Sons in Rapid City. He added “ My advice to high school students is to work hard and play hard, but make sure that working hard comes first. Above all, make every effort to go to college. My education at the School of Mines very definitely provided the opportunity for me to select and be successful in my chosen career. An engineering degree provides a strong foundation for a career in many different fields.” Belzer’s father, Emiel Belzer, II. graduated from the School of Mines in 1934, also with a civil engineering degree.
In the event there is more than one qualified applicant, selection will be based on academic performance defined by class rank and ACT score. If there is no entering freshman from DeSmet or Lake Preston, funds will be held and made available the following year. If in any given year there are funds to support more than one scholarship, more than one award may be made to the students who meet the above criteria. The award will be $ 1,000 per year, per student.
