SDSM& T “ JUMP START COLLEGE” PROGRAM GIVES
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HEAD START ON COLLEGE EDUCATION
Interested in getting a head start on your college education? Applications for the dual enrollment program at SDSM& T are now being accepted. The program, which offers high school students the opportunity to receive both high school and college credit by attending university classes, is open to students who meet the criteria for the program. Students may enroll in up to two courses per semester at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and apply them to high school graduation requirements.
“ This program is an ideal opportunity for both traditional and home schooled high school students,” remarked Don Hapward, Director of Admissions at SDSM& T. “ Not only is it a stepping stone towards a college education, but it also gives the student a tremendous incentive to accelerate their college education.”
For students who desire additional academic challenges dual enrollment offers an excellent opportunity to attend a nationally known university. The program gives high school students an introduction to college life and eases the transition from a high school to a college environment. It also allows them to meet other students, associate with faculty, and get an up- close, in- depth look at what SDSM& T is all about.
“ We are particularly interested in providing opportunities for students in math and sciences,” Dr. Karen Whitehead, Vice President for Academic Affairs said. “ The Jump Start College program keeps students interested and challenged.”
Another major plus for students participating in the program is the advanced work and credit they can present to institutions in other parts of the nation as they make plans for post- secondary education. Credits earned at SDSM& T will be accepted at most higher education institutions.
Scholarships are available to fund one- half of fees and tuition for one course per semester. Funding is limited so students are encouraged to act quickly. Scholarships will be awarded on a first- come, first- served basis.
Students who would like more information about this exciting opportunity, or who wish to enroll in SDSM& T classes, should contact the SDSM& T Office of Academic and Enrollment Services at 394- 2414 or their high school Guidance Office.
