AREA STUDENTS CANDIDATES FOR DEGREES FROM SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MINES & TECHNOLOGY
Two students from Thornton were candidates for Bachelor of Science degrees from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T) during SDSM& T’s spring commencement ceremony on May 8, 1999. Branden Effland was a candidate for a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering; and Branden Gonzales was a candidate for a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with high honors*. The commencement address was given by Ernest Micek, chairman and CEO of Cargill Incorporated. Micek also was presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Science Degree during the ceremony. [* High Honors – 3.60- 3.79 GPA]
Special honored guests also included South Dakota Board of Regent David Gienapp, thirty 50- year graduates from the 1949 SDSM& T class, and the 1999 Guy E. March Medallist, Dr. Paul Gnirk. The Guy E. March Medal is the highest alumni award that recognizes outstanding professional achievement. Amanda Sampson, mathematics, delivered the senior class message.
