SDSM& T MINI- BAJA TEAM TO COMPETE AT WESTERN
COMPETITION APRIL 15- 17
The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology Mini- Baja team will compete in the Western Competition Thursday, April 15 through Saturday, April 17 at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. Sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers ( SAE), the intercollegiate Mini- Baja competition involves real- world engineering design projects in which each student team designs, builds, and races a four- wheel, off- road recreation vehicle. The Briggs & Stratton Corporation donated an 8- horsepower engine for each team’s vehicle.
The Mini- Baja judges evaluate each team on standards of engineering design, technical inspection/ safety, sales presentation and cost analysis. In addition to acceleration/ braking, maneurverability, and hill climb events, the vehicles also compete in a 4- hour, off- road endurance race over rugged terrain to determine dependability.
At last year’s competition held at the University of Texas- El Paso, Tech’s Mini- Baja team finished 9th overall out of 55 teams. “ Last year’s finish was our best ever,” said Arlin Sandbulte, Mini- Baja team leader. “ This year we hope to finish just as high.”
SDSM& T’s Mini- Baja team leader is Arlin Sandbulte, a senior Mechanical Engineering major from Laverne MN. Other Mini- Baja team members attending the competition are senior Nathan Selchert ( ME, Jamestown ND), senior Matt Helde ( ME, Rapid City), senior Jeff Major ( MET, Platteville CO), senior Dan Lerew ( MET, Rapid City), sophomore Jaaron Johnson ( ME, Rapid City), freshman Don Wishard ( ME, Lantry), and freshman Tony Fischer ( CENG, Midland). Dan Dolan, professor of Mechanical Engineering is the project advisor.
Media are invited to the unveiling of this year’s Mini- Baja vehicle Wednesday, April 14 at 8: 00 am at the Arch on the SDSM& T campus. The team will depart at approximately 9: 00 am for the competition.
