LANTRY STUDENT COMPETES AT MINI- BAJA COMPETITION
Don Wishard of Lantry SD was a member of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) Mini Baja that competed at the Western Competition held April 15- April 17 at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. Seventy- two teams from fifty- eight different schools participated in the event. Wishard is a freshman Mechanical Engineering major at SDSM& T.
Tech’s Mini- Baja team placed in the top ten in five out of the seven events of the competition. They took 4th place in the Hill Climb event; 6th place in Safety and Design; 8th place in Maneuverability; 9th place in Sales presentation; and 9th place in Acceleration. A broken axle landed them in 48th place in the Endurance Run and they finished 42nd in Cost which put them at 30th overall.
“ The team managed to place above some very prestigious schools. I was proud of the students,” said faculty advisor Dan Dolan. “ They represented us well. On a very limited budget they put together one of the best cars at the event,” he added.
Sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers ( SAE), the intercollegiate Mini- Baja competition involves real- world engineering design projects in which each student team designs, builds, and races a four- wheel, off- road recreation vehicle. The Briggs & Stratton Corporation donated an 8- horsepower engine for each team’s vehicle.
