LOCAL STUDENT FINISHES IN 3RD PLACE AT WEEKEND COMPETITION
The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) Student Branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers ( IEEE) competed in a fire- fighting robot competition the weekend of April 16- 18, 1999. Jason Ash of Shenandoah was on Tech’s team which finished in third place out of 16 competitors. Ash is a senior mechanical engineering major at SDSM& T. The competition was at the IEEE Region 5 Conference held at Shreveport, Louisiana.
In the fire- fighting robot competition, the robot must navigate autonomously through a maze and then extinguish the flame of a candle and return to home base without touching any of the maze walls. Other members of SDSM& T’s fire- fighting robot team include Karl Hiramoto ( Jr, CENG, Rapid City SD), Dan Muzzey ( Sr, EE, Rapid City SD), and Marijane White ( Sr, CENG, Fort Wayne IN).
