SDSM& T DINO DASH – 5K RUN/ WALK TAKES OFF MAY 1, 1999
The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology is sponsoring the 1999 Dinosaur Dash – 5K Run/ Walk on Saturday, May 1, 1999. The Dino Dash is being held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Museum of Geology’s field dig programs and the first year of the Children’s Science Center. In conjunction with the 5K event, the Children’s Science Center will be hosting an open house from 10: 00 am 12: 00 noon for the public to get a sneak peak at the new museum.
The Dino Dash will serve as the unveiling for the dinosaur and fossil exhibits at the Children’s Science Center. Visitors will be able to view exhibits and activities at the Center to include a simulated fossil dig with fossils from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic Eras. A Tyrannosaurus Rex tooth will be on display - the T- Rex had the largest teeth of all the dinosaurs, sometimes growing up to six inches long. Carnegie Dinosaurs will be on display featuring such dinosaurs as an Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, and Triceratops. Visitors will be able to view a map of South Dakota and the Black Hills identifying where fossils have been found in the area, and King Tyrant – the largest predator ever to haunt the land – has been spotted at the Museum, so venture cautiously!
The Dinosaur Dash will offer participants opportunities to earn awards in numerous categories including 5K run, 5K wheel chair race, and dinosaur costume contest for various age levels. Participants will include the ROTC Mount Rushmore Battalion from SDSM& T, classrooms from local elementary schools, members of the 1998 Leadership Rapid City class, and kids and adults of all ages.
