SDSM& T STUDENT FROM TOSTON ON WINNING CONCRETE CANOE TEAM
Kristin Hensley of Toston MT is a member of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) concrete canoe team that took first place at the 1999 Rocky Mountain Regional Conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE). The conference was held at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado the weekend of April 9- 10. Hensley, a junior civil and environmental engineering major, is the president of the SDSM& T Student ASCE Chapter.
Due to 80- 100 mph winds over the weekend no concrete canoe races were held but this did not stop Tech from coming in first place overall. The team came home with first- place honors in canoe display, canoe paper, and finished product. They took first- place in stiffness of bridge, third- place in technical and non- technical paper presentations, and third- place in bridge overall.
This year marks the tenth time that SDSM& T has qualified for and will be competing in the National Concrete Canoe Competition. South Dakota Tech won the national concrete canoe title in 1995 and has finished in the top five in nationals three times.
Tech’s concrete canoe team will compete in the National Concrete Canoe Competition to be held June 17- 20 in Melbourne, Florida. The 12th Annual Concrete Canoe Competition is sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers and Master Builders Inc.
