SDSM& T AND WDTI STUDENTS COLLABORATE ON CONSTRUCTION
OF MINI- INDY VEHICLE
Students from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and Western Dakota Technical Institute are combining their expertise to construct the first ever aluminum frame for Tech’s Formula SAE or Mini- Indy Vehicle. The interaction between the two institutions started several years ago but this year the two have a major coordinated effort to make the frame for the Formula SAE vehicle.
Engineering students at Tech have designed the frame to be manufactured out of aluminum, and have consulted with students and faculty at WDTI to learn about manufacturing problems. The industrial maching students are now making the individual tubes for the frame and the students in the welding program are welding the tubes together into the complete frame.
Use of aluminum allows the construction of a lighter frame than the Formula SAE vehicle has ever had before. It also gives the students a chance to work with a different material and learn about its behavior in such a system. The auto industry is using more and more aluminum, so students at both institutions must learn how to engineer with it.
" Products are developed by teams today, and the teams involve members from many of the areas in industry. A common team for our students to be in is a team consisting of manufacturing personnel and engineers. The two groups need to learn to work together and that learning comes first through communication and trust,” said Dr. Dan Dolan, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at SDSM& T. “ We are trying to get these groups of students to trust each other and to be able to communicate with each other before thay leave school. This challenging project is proving that we can do that. Both groups are benefitting from the experience."
Tomorrow morning, February 17 at 10: 00 am is a chance for the media to come to WDTI and speak to students and faculty from each institution about the collaboration. You will be able to see the project as it is unfolding and see the joint collaboration at work. For further information about the visit tomorrow morning, contact the SDSM& T Office of University Relations at 394- 6082/ 2554.
