The Mabel K. Richardson Collection is made up of distinct manuscript collections focusing primarily on South Dakota and the surrounding region. These collections include correspondence, photographs, journals, scrapbooks, maps, and other manuscript materials. The Richardson Collection concentrates on the people, places, and events in South Dakota’s cultural, political, and economic history.

  • Beede Family Papers Grace Beede was a classics professor at the University of South Dakota and also the great-granddaughter of Captain Nelson Preston Miner, who helped muster into service the 1st Dakota Cavalry, Company A. Highlighted here are carte de visite photographs and cabinet cards of men from the 1st Dakota Cavalry, Company Aand other cavalries and companies.
  • Cedric Cummins Papers Cedric Cummins was a professor of history at the University of South Dakota who wrote extensively on the history of the university. Highlighted here are early photographs of university buildings.
  • Charley F. Gutch World War II Letters, 1945-1946 Charley Gutch served aa medical officer in the United States Navy during World War II. Here are the letters he wrote home to his wife during his service aa member of SACO and Naval Group China from 1945-1946.
  • Civil War Diary The diary of an unknown Union Soldier reflecting daily life enlisted in the 2nd Regiment, Company A, of the Minnesota Volunteers, also known as the Chatfield Guards. The diary dates from June 18, 1861 to July 17, 1863 and documents life in camp, marches, and military engagements.
  • Horace J. Austin Papers Horace Austin was a land surveyor in Dakota Territory and later a territorial and state legislator. Highlighted here are Austin’s dairies from 1868 and 1887 as well as correspondence of Horace’s and other members of the Austin family.
  • Jane Rooker Breeden Papers Jane Rooker Breeden was active in women’s suffrage in South Dakota. Highlighted here is her correspondence and the South Dakota Representative, a bimonthly newspaper published by John E. DeMotte in Pierre, South Dakota reporting on local and state news and daily life.
  • Larry Pressler Papers Larry Pressler was a United States Representative and Senator from 1975-1997. Highlighted here are materials related to US relations with Pakistan and the Pressler Amendment.
  • William J. Janklow Gubernatorial Papers Bill Janklow was Governor of South Dakota from 1979-1987 and 1995-2003. Highlighted here are Janklow’s filmed addresses to the legislature from both his terms in office.
