Campus Collections is the result of collaborative efforts between the University Libraries and departments and programs across campus to provide digital access to a variety of historical collections held throughout the University. One example is the Asteraceae family of specimens collected by W. H. Over. In 1913, William Henry Over (1866-1956) established the University of South Dakota Herbarium to provide faculty, students, and scientists with plant specimens from all counties in South Dakota and adjoining regions in the Plains and Upper Midwest. Establishing the Herbarium at the University was among Over’s many accomplishments as a botanist, author, and curator of natural history collections. The collection's focus is the Asteraceae family of specimens collected by Over throughout South Dakota between 1913 and 1949. It is but a small sample of the specimens that Over collected during his career. Browse or search the images by common name, or by genus, family, species, or subspecies. Likewise, search or browse by habitat as well as by place—county and locality.
