THE VOLANTE. -------------------- VERMILLION, SOUTH DAKOTA. Published monthly by the Students' Association of the University of Dakota. -------------------- -------------------- BOARD OF EDIIORS: E. H. HOLMAN, Editor-in-Chief. T. J. SHANARD, Editorials and Reviews. T. E. POWERS, Literary and Miscellany. SAM B. HOSKINS. College Notes and Exchanges. BLANCHE BANTA, Locals. S. A. D. BOGGGS, Business Manager. THOMAS GARRY, Assistant Business Managers. C. E. REEVES. -------------------- -------------------- EDITORIAL. -------------------- SALUTATORY. Rev. Howard B. Grose, of Pittsburg, Pa., has been called to the presidency of the University of Dakota, and has accepted the call and is now officially serving in that capacity. It is with considerable forethought and after careful deliberation that the VOLANTE greets the new president with a hearty welcome. We have thought upon all the possible contingencies. We know some of the reasons which prompted the action of the Board of Directors, as also we have heard the reasons why the Board should not thus early have called any one to the presidential chair. We have heard the opinions of many representative students, and believe that we know their feelings on the matter. It is therefore without any sudden impulse and with no empty approbation that the VOLANTE welcomes President Grose to his new labors. This institution has a bright future. The way is already open, and the next decade will certainly see a great advance in the fame and usefulness of the University of Dakota. Broad lines of work have been laid down for this seat of learning in this new state. Each department keeps steadily in view the goal of ultimate development. The standard of entrance is constantly being raised. The requirements for graduation are gradually becoming greater. Already the institution has passed the formative period and has assumed the work of a regular college. The uncertain years of foundation laying have passed and have been wisely employed. Now, therefore, the time is ripe for action, and the work of Dr. Olson so well begun must be carried to a successful end. To this work are devoted the entire energies of this University. Faculty, directors, and students are pledged to see it well done. The whole institution has caught the master spirit, and so long as the University of Dakota stands Edward Olson's life will not be forgotten nor its influence unfelt. To the new president we extend the right hand of fellowship. We give him the thoughtful promise of loyalty to himself and co-operation in all his undertakings for the upbuilding of this institution. If we honored his predecessor we will honor him; if we supported the one we will not neglect the other; if we loved Dr. Olson we will open our hearts to his intimate friend.
