SOUTH DAKOTA STATE SCHOOL OF MINES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
May 7, 1935
Once again graduation approaches in the same rush as the time when you finished. This year special plans and arrangements have been laid out to conform with the setting. I suppose you all know the plans for this year are a little out of the ordinary, in fact the set up is one that will be envied by all the larger institutions in the East.
Dr. Briggs, Director of the U. S. Bureau of Standards, has been chosen to give the Commencement Address. Dr. Briggs' address will be of great interest as he is one of the leading scientists in the United States. Among the other notable men accompanying Dr. Briggs is Secretary of War Dern, Captain Stevens and Dr. Grosvenor, President of the National Geographic Society. Having such distinguished men on the Commencement program will cause a lot of publicity which in turn brought about the idea of broadcasting the program on a coast to coast system of radio and taking pictures.
In order to make as good showing as possible, we alumni thought if we could form part of the procession, preceding the seniors which is customary, that the people who view the movies in the future will not think our institution as small as it might appear in name. After the commencement program we have tried to round out the day with entertainment that might be suitable to everyone. We are to have lunch out in the park in the same manner as Gene used to serve it. Arrangements have been made for all who plan to attend to secure passes to the stratosphere bowl, something which we expect will attract many of you. In the evening a dance has been planned and we assure you that a good time can be had if you will arrange to be here.
While definite plans are not yet formed, it will apparently be necessary to charge a small fee in order that the various expenses of the day may be taken care of. If you will check the various items on the inclosed card that you wish to attend and return it immediately, we will mail you definite plans as they materialize.
